Evacuation Routes
Please take time to plan an emergency an evacuation route. Getting in the car and knowing where you are going is only the beginning. Be prepared for long travel times and limited opportunities to stop. Take a supply of water and snacks as well as empty containers for trash. A spare can of gasoline is also recommended if you’re traveling through unfamiliar rural areas. Call the place you are traveling to prior to leaving and let them know when to expect you and what route your are taking. It's also a good idea to let your friends and family know that your when, where and how long you are going.

Enduring the Hurricane
It is best to follow your local government’s advice and evacuate. If evacuation isn’t requested it’s good to have an emergency plan. Make sure you have a stocked and current first aid kit. Many items have expiration dates so check them to be sure. Keep a supply of food and water on hand. Fill containers, bathtub and sinks if necessary. If you have a gas stove you’ll be able to cook even with out electricity. For all electric kitchens a camping stove and a few propane bottles can do well too. Pull out your flashlights and make them easily accessible and check the batteries.

Inland areas in the storms path will experience large amounts or rain and heavy winds. Flying debris and fallen trees are the biggest causes of damage and power outages. Bring in any loose patio furniture or lawn decorations. Check to make sure that all drainage ditches and gutters are free to let excess water out of your yard. Have a shovel on hand to dig trenches to channel water away if necessary.
